What Can We Do?
In order to ensure the survival of the Sperm Whale, we need to educate the public with flyers, posts on social media, or information sessions. We need to inform the public of a few key rules that will greatly secure the survival of this endangered species. The NOAA Fisheries website has three key rules that I think are quite simple and easy to follow. Number one: If you are whale watching please keep your distance. Watch the whale from a one hundred feet radius and try to minimize your visit for thirty minutes. Number two: Report on marine life. If you see a whale who is in distress whether the whale be visibly sick or injured please report it. Number three: Report a violation by calling the NOAA Fisheries Enforcement Hotline at (800)-853-1964. These three rules can be printed on flyers and can be distributed across towns near the ocean and they can also be posted on social media where a larger community will be able to access these rules. I also think that scientists should continue to monitor the population of the species as well as study the dead specimens to see what the main causes of death are so they can try to look out for these risks and minimize them. I also think we should create information sessions for fisherman. We need to try to reduce injury by boats and fishing hooks by creating a boundary near deep waters where the sperm whale lives so boats and fisherman cannot cross and potentially injure the species. The last thing we can do is possibly the easiest. We need to protect their habitat by keeping it clean. If you see waste, cans or debris near the waters or in the waters please pick it up so we can keep their habitat in the best condition possible.
